Dear Arkansas Soybean Producer:
Welcome to "Soybeans Today," the annual
publication of the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board. This
publication is part of our effort to keep you informed
about the programs and activities that you pay for through
the checkoff program. As you read this, I hope you are
impressed with the huge amount of work being accomplished
as a result of your investment. The Board's highest priorities
are to ensure that it funds efforts that help Arkansas
producers, and that those efforts always have the potential
to improve your profitability.
During the 1997-98 fiscal year, the Promotion Board
funded $1.6 million in research and extension efforts
through the University of Arkansas. You will read about
many of the positive results achieved by these programs.
The board branched into new areas, too, funding a
survey through the University of Central Arkansas exploring
people's acceptance of soy in the diet and their knowledge
of its nutritional value. We also funded an effort aimed
at educating the public about the nutritional benefits
of soy proteins. These efforts have the potential to greatly
increase the use of soybeans and soy products by providing
new marketing opportunities. At the national level, your
checkoff dollars are funding promotional programs for
soy foods and research to develop new products from soybeans.
Many challenges lay ahead. The national soybean checkoff
program will poll in early 1999 to determine support for
the program and if the need exists to conduct a producer
referendum on the continuance of the program. This process
is mandated by national soybean legislation and will give
you the opportunity to express your opinion about the
program.
The Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board welcomes any
input you have about the programs and activities carried
out by the Board. If you have any comments or suggestions,
please contact me or any of the other Board members.
Sincerely,
Art Simpson, Chairman
